Module 3 Transmitter $\rightarrow$ Tuned Receiver Lab: How Modulation Shapes the Complex Signal
Every radio wave is a rotating complex phasor $e^{i\omega_c t} = \cos(\omega_c t) + i\sin(\omega_c t)$. Choose how to encode data onto it:

Amplitude Modulation (AM) — Varying the Real Envelope

AM multiplies the real message wave $m(t)$ onto the rotating complex carrier $e^{i\omega_c t}$. In the frequency domain, this creates two sidebands around $f_c$ requiring bandwidth $BW_{\text{sig}} = 2f_m$. If your RLC receiver has too high a $Q$ (too narrow a bandwidth), it shaves off the sidebands and muffles the audio!

$$s(t) = \operatorname{Re}\Big\{\underbrace{A_c\big[1 + m\cos(\omega_m t)\big]}_{\text{Real Envelope}} e^{i\omega_c t}\Big\}$$
Module 4 "Verbing Math": Clearing the LAX Holding Pattern in Maxwell's Equations
Inspired by L. Van Warren's Verbing Math — turning nested prefix nouns into active postfix pipelines

Why do differential equations intimidate students? Because traditional academic English reads symbols from left to right as nested passive nouns ("the divergence of the curl of..."), forcing your working memory to hold an unexecuted stack of operations like airliners stacked in a holding pattern over LAX. When we verb the operators using -itate and -iate suffixes, each operation executes immediately on the physical field!

1. Gauss's Electric Law $\nabla \cdot \mathbf{E} = \frac{\rho}{\varepsilon_0}$

❌ Noun Stack (Holding Pattern):
"The divergence of the electric field is equal to the volume charge density divided by the permittivity of free space."
✅ Verbed Pipeline (Cleared Runway):
"Divergitate the electric field to get scaled charge density."

2. Gauss's Magnetic Law $\nabla \cdot \mathbf{B} = 0$

❌ Noun Stack (Holding Pattern):
"The divergence of the magnetic flux density vector field is identically equal to zero."
✅ Verbed Pipeline (Cleared Runway):
"Divergitate the magnetic field, and it vanishes."

3. Faraday's Law (Inductance!) $\nabla \times \mathbf{E} = -\frac{\partial \mathbf{B}}{\partial t}$

❌ Noun Stack (Holding Pattern):
"The curl of the electric field equals the negative of the partial derivative with respect to time of the magnetic field."
✅ Verbed Pipeline (Cleared Runway):
"Curl the electric field, and you negate the time-differentiated magnetic field."

4. Ampère–Maxwell (Capacitance!) $\nabla \times \mathbf{B} = \mu_0\mathbf{J} + \mu_0\varepsilon_0\frac{\partial \mathbf{E}}{\partial t}$

❌ Noun Stack (Holding Pattern):
"The curl of the magnetic field equals permeability times current density plus permittivity times the time derivative of the electric field."
✅ Verbed Pipeline (Cleared Runway):
"Curl the magnetic field to sum scaled current density and the time-differentiated electric field."
🚀 Radio, TV & Starlight in One Breath ($\Box \mathbf{E} = 0$):
"Curl Faraday's law, negate the laplaciated electric field, and equate it to the twice-time-differentiated electric field from Ampère's law: Dalembertiate the electric field in a vacuum, and it vanishes."
∇²E - με (∂²E/∂t²) = □E = 0

⚡ Oliver Heaviside (1850–1925): The Operator Maverick

A self-taught British telegrapher who left school at 16, Heaviside took Maxwell's 20 tangled equations and forged the four vector laws above. He coined the words impedance, inductance, and reactance, and realized that the verb "time-differentiate" ($\frac{d}{dt}$) could be treated as an algebraic multiplier $p$.

Heaviside's Dictionary: "Time-differentiate" → Multiply by p

🌩️ Charles Proteus Steinmetz (1865–1923): The Complex Phasor Wizard

In 1893, Steinmetz proved that for any oscillating radio or AC wave $e^{i\omega t}$, Heaviside's "time-differentiate" verb is literally multiplication by $+i\omega$ (a $+90^\circ$ rotation into the magnetic field), and "time-integrate" is division by $i\omega = -i/\omega$ (a $-90^\circ$ rotation into the electric field)!

∂/∂t → × (+iω) [Inductor +90°]  |  ∫dt → × (-i/ω) [Capacitor -90°]
