Size and Mass Reduction

Consider a 1/2 scale spacecraft model. Because this model is exactly 1/2 the size in all of its x, y and z dimensions, it's volume is (1/2)^3 or 1/8 that of it's parent spacecraft. This is significant. Every time we divide the platform size in two (or any other physical object!), we reduce the mass and volume by a factor of eight. To prove this to yourself, take an exactly square block and subdivide it in x, y and z. If you don't get the pieces mixed up, you should have eight identical replicas of the block, each at 1/2 scale:
